FEAST OF THE WEEK

Thursday March 25: The Annunciation of the Lord.

REOPENING OF CHURCHES - COMMENCING PALM SUNDAY

  • During the past week the Catholic bishops in Northern Ireland issued a statement announcing a ‘cautious’ return to worship, which should only begin after a thorough risk assessment has been carried outto ensure the safest possible return to public worship in our Churches.’ The bishops emphasise the need for continued caution and a rigorous application of all mitigations and safeguards required.

  • The bishops also state that every person should consider carefully if returning to collective worship is a safe and appropriate step for them, at this time, and they strongly encourage the faithful to join in the ceremonies of Holy Week, by way of live-streaming, from the ‘domestic church’ of their own living rooms.

  • The bishops also remind all the faithful that the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days remains suspended.

  • It is important to note that Weddings and Funerals will continue to be subject to the relevant state participation, including regulations in terms of the numbers that can attend.

  • In light of this statement and following the necessary risk assessment the following will apply in the Parishes of Ballinascreen and Desertmartin for Holy Week 2021.

    1. Anniversary Masses on Friday March 26 will be available via WEBCAM ONLY.

    2. Masses for Palm Sunday, 28 March, will be at usual times in both parishes (Vigil and Sunday morning) but to attend TICKETS MUST BE BOOKED ONLINE.

    3. Masses on Monday 29, Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 31 March will be celebrated at 11.00 am in Holy Rosary Church and 7.30 pm in St Mary’s Coolcalm. No booking is required for these three days of Holy Week, but obviously social distancing rules will apply.

    4. Tickets MUST be booked online if you wish to attend any of the Holy Week Ceremonies on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday or Easter Sunday. Tickets may be booked for more than one ceremony. However if you book for Holy Saturday we ask you not to book also for a Mass on Easter Sunday, (and vice-versa) this will enable as many people as possible to share in the Easter Eucharist.

    5. Online bookings for Palm Sunday Masses and Holy Week Ceremonies will open for both parishes on WEDNESDAY MARCH 24 at 7.00 pm - a link to the booking form will be placed on each parish website.

The times of all Masses in both parishes for Palm Sunday and Holy Week 2021 are at the bottom of this Bulletin.

REMEMBERING ALL WHO HAVE DIED IN OUR DIOCESE SINCE THE START OF COVID-19

Bishop McKeown will lead an all-night Vigil in St Eugene’s Cathedral on the night of Friday 26 March, as we prepare for Holy Week. This Vigil will be built round the Stations of the Cross and all those who have died in our diocese since the start of Covid restrictions will be remembered, since during this time funerals have been far from ‘normal’ and the pain of loss has, in many cases, been compounded by the paucity of support which would normally be there through attendance at wake and funeral.

During the Vigil, the names of the deceased will be read out and a rose plant will be brought forward to the sanctuary in the name of each parish. These roses will, at a later stage, be planted in a planned Garden of Remembrance at the Cathedral. Further details on Parish Faceboook and website during the week.

SOCIAL DISTANCING

In the fight against coronavirus, maintaining social distancing is everyone’s responsibility. And with the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccination programme well underway there are fresh concerns around complacency. These concerns coupled with the increased anxiety of many, especially those in vulnerable groups, around contracting the virus is why it is so important to continue to show support for and practice social distancing.

MASS TIMES IN BALLINASCREEN & DESERTMARTIN FOR PALM SUNDAY & HOLY WEEK 2021

PRAYERS FOR OUR PROTECTION

The Irish Catholic Bishops have asked for prayers for those affected by the Coronavirus. Placing all our trust in the Lord, and asking Our Lady to intercede for us, the bishops invite everyone to pray these prayers:

EXTRACT FROM SAINT PATRICK’S BREASTPLATE

Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me,

Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise, Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me, Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me.

MEMORARE

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to you,

O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer. Amen
