FEASTS OF THE WEEK

Tuesday 5: Blessed Edmund Rice, religious.

Friday 8: Blessed John Sullivan.

Born 8 May 1861, ordained a Jesuit priest in 1907.

His reputation for holiness and as a person of prayer spread rapidly and he was always available to the sick, the poor and anyone in need.

He died in 1933.

He was declared blessed at the first ever beatification held in Ireland on 13 May 2017 at St Francis Xavier Church, Gardiner Street, Dublin.

MAY ALTARS

Thnak you to everyone who sent in beautiful pictures of their special May Altars and Prayer Spaces. They all make a fantastic presentation on the Parish Facebook. All the images have been arranged in a gallery on the parish website and may be accessed via this link: https://www.parishofballinascreen.com/copy-of-may-altars-2020

As parishioners cannot attend Mass in church at the moment, these Prayer Spaces / May Altars are more important than ever. Many children created their own images for their altars - well done.

PARISH ENVELOPES

At the start of the Coronavirus crisis Bishop Donal McKeown contacted all parishes in the diocese and asked that those parishes which distribute new boxes of envelopes during the month of March, for use on the first Sunday of April, should not do so. He felt, rightly, that the situation was too serious for parishioners to be going from house to house and that the financial support that every parish needs to survive could be addressed at a later date.

As this pandemic shows no sign of abating just yet and we may be unable to gather in large numbers for some more considerable time, it is appropriate now to address the issue of parish financial support.

This is in response to the many parishioners who have contacted the priests of the parish asking how they may safely contribute again.

For those who wish, and who are able to contribute, I am proposing a range of options that have been discussed by the Parish Finance Committee and we would like to stress that whichever option you choose, please exercise caution on the amount you contribute and do not put yourself under financial pressure.

If you find yourself unable to make a financial contribution under the present circumstances, then please support our parish and its mission with your prayers.

In the coming week, all homes in the parish will receive a letter offering four different ways to contribute.

Those who currently contribute with an envelope will also receive new envelopes in the post and until it is safe to attend Mass again, envelopes may be put through the Parish Office letterbox or any of the Parochial Houses in the parish. The letter will also contain the information needed if you would like to set up a standing order with your bank, either online or by other means.

A new Parish ‘Donate’ button on the parish website will allow parishioners to contribute safely each week or month.

  • The Parish Draw which runs from the last Monday of the month May to May, will be delayed this year until the early summer. Details on this will follow in the weeks ahead. Thank you for your continued support.

  • Anyone who would like to donate to St Vincent de Paul can do so by putting their donation in an ordinary envelope and putting it through the Parish Office letterbox.

PADRE PIO MASS

A Padre Pio Mass will be celebrated every Wednesday at 7.30 pm in Longtower Church Derry while this pandemic lasts. There will be a special blessing with a first class relic of St. Pio. You are invited to take part from home and join in the prayers of this Mass during this pandemic.

100th BIRTHDAY

Congratulations and best wishes to Mary Rogers, Brackaghdisert, who celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday April 27.

Mary's family would like to thank the staff of Magherafelt Manor Nursing Home, where Mary is now resident for helping to make her birthday so special. They would also like to acknowledge all the messages of congratulations and support which Mary received from all her many friends and neighbours in the parish.

PARISH BAPTISMS

In accordance with the Government statement and guidelines issued by Bishop McKeown there will be no baptisms until further notice. Baptisms will resume as soon as possible, but we ask parents not to be anxious. It is customary nowadays for children to be baptised many weeks and months after they are born. Parents can bless their children with the Sign of the Cross morning and evening and recite the Guardian Angel Prayer for them:

Angel of God My guardian dear To whom God’s love Commits me here Ever this day Be at my side To light and guard To rule and guide. Amen.

PARISH ANNIVERSARY MASS

If parishioners in Ballinascreen and Desertmartin wish to have their loved one prayed for at the 10.00 am Mass in Holy Rosary or the 7.30 pm Mass in Coolcam on a Friday, you MUST give their name to Ballinascreen Parish Office by 12 noon on Thursday of the relevant week. You may contact the office by email. These Masses may be viewed on the respective Parish webcam.

POPE FRANCIS@ PONTIFEX

Let us rediscover the beauty of praying the #Rosary at home during May!

At the end of each Rosary, we can recite a prayer asking for Mary’s intercession, that the Lord might free us from this pandemic and life might serenely resume its normal course.

PRAYERS FOR OUR PROTECTION

The Irish Catholic Bishops have asked for prayers for those affected by the Coronavirus. Placing all our trust in the Lord, and asking Our Lady to intercede for us, the bishops invite everyone to pray these prayers:

EXTRACT FROM SAINT PATRICK’S BREASTPLATE

Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise, Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me, Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me.

MEMORARE

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to you,

O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer. Amen.
