HOLY ROSARY CHURCH

Work in replacing the roof of Holy Rosary Church is progressing well and on schedule. We look forward to welcoming our Bishop, Donal McKeown, on Sunday December 1 at 3.00 pm as Chief Celebrant at the Mass of Rededication, when the church will reopen. Much of the interior redecoration has long been overdue but the state of the roof necessitated that we waited until that problem was remedied. We have also taken the opportunity to provide a new Altar, Ambo and Chair which will be the centre piece of the new sanctuary in Holy Rosary in this its fortieth anniversary year. Bishop Donal will consecrate the new altar, during the Mass of Rededication on Sunday 1 December.

The people of Ballinascreen have long been known for their generosity. Indeed, your weekly contributions have made this work possible. But just as when you do up your house, though you may budget for most things, there are always unexpected costs and the restoration of a church is no different. When the sacristy was being cleared for the work to begin a couple of months ago, we found a book, dated April 27, 1914 - September 5, 1927 in which Fr Hugh Boyle the then parish priest had written his notes for the Sunday Mass, to be announced after Holy Communion. It’s an amazing document, detailing the generosity of the people of Ballinascreen. There were collections for the National Irish Pilgrimage to Lourdes, Newry Cathedral, parishes in the diocese that had no money and needed help, even a collection to spearhead the campaign to prevent conscription being introduced in Ireland during the First World War. But the most interesting of all was the collection taken up for the renovation of Straw Church that was announced on November 26, 1916. The estimated cost was £3000. Within three months the parish had contributed £2700. Though an astonishing amount for its day it is not really any great surprise. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree and your generosity today is reflected in that old battered book

Anyone wishing to make a special donation or sponsor any of the major expenses involved in the renovation of Holy Rosary Church should please contact Fr Madden.

MESSAGE FROM CHURCH LEADERS

The Church leaders of Ireland have called for the weekend of 12-13 October to be dedicated to prayer for the protection of the unborn in our society and for women facing difficult and challenging pregnancies and their families. This is in response to the proposed introduction by Westminster of legislation on October 21 allowing for unregulated abortion in the North.

Please support the online petition by Baroness Nuala O’Loan calling on the Secretary of State and Members of the Northern Ireland Assembly to take action to prevent unregulated abortion being introduced to the North by Westminster on 21 October. The petition can be found online at Change.org (search for Nuala O’Loan). Please contact your local MLA or MP and ask them to take action to stop the introduction of unregulated abortion to Northern Ireland by Westminster on 21 October. You can find contact details for your MLA online at www.bothlivesmatter.org/findmyMLA

You can also send a postcard to your MLA (Michelle O'Neill, Keith Buchanan, Linda Dillon, Patsy McGlone, Emma Sheerin and local Westminster MP Francie Molloy). The postcards are available at the back of the churches.
