PLENARY INDULGENCE

This year, due to present circumstances arising from the ‘Covid-19’ pandemic, the period during which Plenary Indulgences can be gained for the Faithful Departed is extended to the entire month of November.

The Plenary Indulgence to be gained on 2 November, Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, by those who reverently visit a church or oratory and recite there the “Our Father” and “Creed”, may be transferred, not only to the preceding or following Sunday or to the day of the Solemnity of All Saints, but also to another day of the month of November, freely chosen by each member of the faithful. This means it is not necessary to visit a church on All Souls’ Day to obtain the indulgence for the Faithful Departed. Any day in November will suffice.

Also, as instructed by Pope Francis, earlier in the year during Lent, so as to avoid crowded gatherings in sacred places – we can still gain the Plenary Indulgence if – united in spirit with all the other faithful, shunning sin completely and intending to fulfil the customary conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father) as soon as possible – we recite, before an image of Jesus or the Blessed Virgin Mary, prayers for the departed – for example Evening Prayer or Vespers of the Office for the Dead, the Holy Rosary, the Crown of Divine Mercy, other prayers for beloved deceased relatives – or spend time meditating on one of the Gospel passages proposed by the Liturgy of the Dead or perform a work of mercy, offering to God the pains and labours of our own lives.

FRIDAY MASSES - PARISH ANNIVERSARY AND MONTH'S MIND MASSES

We ask that only members of a family, whose loved one is being prayed for, attend the Friday Anniversary Mass in Holy Rosary Church at 7.30 pm. This will ensure that there is sufficient space for those who are remembering a Month’s Mind, First Anniversary and other anniversaries.

RESOURCES AND ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES FOR NOVEMBER

  • A short booklet for families has been created to highlight the month of November as a time to remember and pray for our dearly departed. It marks out the feast days, provides a family prayer service and instructions to prepare a sacred space in the home. We hope it may bring comfort, solace and the light of Christ to many people during November. It can be downloaded at this link: LINK TO BOOKLET

  • The Catechetical Centre have also created a range of prayer resources for families to use during November. There is also a 'World Drawing God Day', to engage children in creative drawing. Drawings may be shared online and you can take an online tour of the Drawing God Museum. To view all available resources please visit www.catecheticalcentre.org

PRAYERS FOR OUR PROTECTION

The Irish Catholic Bishops have asked for prayers for those affected by the Coronavirus. Placing all our trust in the Lord, and asking Our Lady to intercede for us, the bishops invite everyone to pray these prayers:

EXTRACT FROM SAINT PATRICK’S BREASTPLATE

Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me,

Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise, Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me, Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me.

MEMORARE

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to you,

O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer. Amen
