FR. JOHN DOWNEY
It is announced this weekend that on the advice of his doctors, Fr John Downey is to retire as curate in Moneyneena with immediate effect. Fr John will remain as Priest in Residence in Moneyneena and health permitting, he has very kindly offered to assist the priests of the parish on occasion, especially during times when either Fr Madden or Fr McGirr will be absent from the parish.
Fr Downey came to Moneyneena in September 2004 and for the past 15 years he has fulfilled his duties and commitments to Ballinascreen Parish with great dedication and service, not least in his monthly visits to the sick of the parish. His work in the schools, especially in St Eoghan’s P.S. Moneyneena and prior to its closure, Altayeskey P.S. has been a constant over these 15 years. As Parish Priest of Ballinascreen and Desertmartin I want to take this opportunity to thank Fr John for his 15 years of active service to the people of Ballinascreen and to wish him every good health and a long and well-deserved retirement.
Fr Peter Madden PP VF
PARISH NOTICE
Following Fr Downey’s retirement there will naturally have to be a realignment of priestly duties and times of Masses across both parishes. New arrangements for the visitation of the sick will be announced in due course as Fr Madden and Fr McGirr consider what is possible and realistic. Some changes are necessary now to make it possible for two priests to minister across six churches in two parishes, where once there were five priests.
At this time Bishop Donal McKeown, Bishop of Derry, is engaged in detailed discussions with the priests of the diocese and the Derry Diocesan Pastoral Council about the future direction of all parishes and the provision of pastoral care across the entire diocese. Other necessary changes across our diocese will come into effect over the next couple of years and we rely on the help of the Holy Spirit to guide our Bishop and all of us in this ongoing process.
Effective from next weekend there will be no 7.30 pm Vigil Mass in Moneyneena.
The 6.30 pm Vigil Mass in Keenaught will move to a new time of 7.30 pm. There will be no 11.30 am Mass in Keenaught on Sunday morning. We understand that this is difficult for those who go to these Masses faithfully each weekend. But at the moment, while there are still two priests in full time ministry, the goal is to provide a Mass in each church either on a Saturday evening or Sunday morning. This may be a time of change, but it is also a time of grace. We keep in mind the words of the Lord: ‘BE NOT AFRAID.’
MONTHLY PADRE PIO MASS
